1999 Indian Chief. Rare motorcycle. Number 710 of only 1,100 produced in 1999. This was the first year for the reintroduction of the iconic Chief Motorcycle. 1953 was the last production year for the “Chief” and some forty-five years later the iconic Indian Chief was reborn. Built and assembled in Gilroy, CA these 1999 models were unique as they all had numbered identification plaques built into the frame as shown in the photos. Only 1,100 were made in 1999 and this one is # 710. These early Indians like this was came from the factory with a S&S Super Stock V-Twin Engine that was 88 cubic inches. The ones with the S&S Engines are more desirable than the later years and parts for them are more readily available.
This actual Indian has underwent a nice cosmetic restoration with all new paint, many parts rechromed, all billet aluminum refinished, all new bolt and hardware in chrome, new tires, new brake pads, new battery, all fluids changed, carburetor removed and cleaned, new fuel filter and fuel hoses, some are braided, new petcock valve, new floorboards, new spark lugs and wires, new chrome plated handlebar control switches, new glass chief head on front fender, rechromed front fender chief head, rechromed several parts including the outer primary, air cleaner assembly, and upper fork tube covers are new. We also rechromed the original front and rear fender tips on the Indian. We did have the rocker box spacers painted to match the red finish of the tanks and fenders and did replace the gaskets as well. New chrome ignition switch with special Indian Chief Head Keys, and the list goes on and on. Another nice feature is that the rear fenders have the factory holes and “eyebrows” so you can run the stock style saddlebags if desired. Approx. $5,000 spent on motorcycle alone doing the nice cosmetic restoration.
The taillight assembly is a nice custom touch with the tombstone style and LED lighting. Fits nice and looks factory but much better than the stock one. We also installed a new chrome voltage regulator and added those nice chrome upper front frame covers. The bike is show quality now and rides out smoothly. This bike was not abused but showing its age is why we did all of those things to it. The odometer read just over 9,000 miles when we purchased the motorcycle but we did in fact replace the speedometer with a new NOS one as the needles were somewhat fading. The odometer now shows 268 and we did keep the original one. So the miles are not actual at 268. Engine does sound well and runs out strong. We have personally ridden this motorcycle the 268 miles. Shifts well and is comfortable to ride with the softail style suspension.
