What a unique and rare find. This 1996 Corvette Collector Edition Coupe features the extremely rare and unusual torch red leather interior. In 1996 this special edition package was only available in the Sebring Silver Metallic Exterior Paint, however you had three interior color choices of black, silver and the torch red like this one. Most of these cars all had the silver or black and seldom did you ever see the red. It is very stunning and in my opinion is the best looking interior color with the silver. It just strikes you when you walk up to it! In fact out of the 4,031 collector edition coupes made only 399 were made with the torch red leather. Narrow that down to this corvette with the LT4 engine I have been told only 164 made then. This one also has almost every option with the exception of the optional run flat tires, and the low tire pressure sensors. This being as rare as it is makes for a future collectable car as I have already have been seeing the market going up on this model of corvette.
The condition of this corvette is extremely nice and well preserved. It is a one owner car according to the CarFax History Report and just recently was traded into Everett Buick GMC out of Arkansas. This actual corvette was sold new at Truman Baker Chevrolet Company out of Searcy Arkansas where it has been its entire life up until we purchased the car. Only 36,926 actual miles on the car. If definitely has been inside and cared for properly once you look at the car. The paint is exceptional and all original with only one or two nicks on the hood which are not that noticeable. Alot of these cars have been painted on or hurt, but not this one. The front spoiler and underside on the nose is still nice. The wheels still have the nice factory finish and have no curb markings at all. The lower rocker moldings do not have alot of the road rash usuasally common on these C4 models of corvettes where that paint is so exposed to damage and road nicks. The glass is all good with the exception of the optional glass roof that this car has as it does have two small cracks on the passenger side that are visible. I personally would not replace or repair the roof at this time unless it would happen to get worse. This car does have the painted roof as well so you do have the best of both worlds. That alone was a rare option costing an additional $950 at which most buyers opted out of getting. This corvette does have the optional F45 selective real time damping suspension which was an additional option of $1,695.
The interior on this collector edition is nice. Non-smoker car and the carpeting including the floor mats, are extra nice. No wear showing. The dash, steering wheel, door panels, console are all still in excellent condition for being almost 22 years old. Everything still works on the car including the air conditioning, cruise control, power antenna, etc.
I personally drove this car back from the Conway Arkansas area approx. 200 miles and drove like a new one. The tires have just been recently replaced and they are Nitto directional performance radial tires sizes, rear 275/40 ZR17, front 255/45 ZR17. They do drive out smoothly and the ride is nice.
I do have the original window sticker with the corvette along with the build sheet, sales brochure, owners manual still in the original leather binder with plastic bag to hold it in with the corvette ink pen, wheel locks with instruction card, original knock outs for the keys, key fob and a clean CarFax vehicle history report showing the miles on the car as actual. I also have an odometer statement signed by the dealer whom we bought the car from.
The “Collector Edition” model celebrates the final year of production for the fourth-generation Corvette. This eminently collectible Corvette model is distinguished by its exclusive Sebring Silver Paint, chromed “Collector Edition” emblems, 17” five-spoke ZR-1 style aluminum wheels painted silver, black brake calipers with raised bright aluminum “Corvette” lettering. The cockpit-style interior features perforated Sport seats with “Collector Edition” embroidery available in Torch Red, Black, or Light Gray. This special package was available in a coupe or convertible form, and also available with the optional LT4 engine or the standard LT1 engines.
The LT4 engine as this corvette has, is very unique and only offered this one year. This new RPO LT4 330-horsepower engine has the performance advantages of high-flow aluminum cylinder heads, larger hollow-stem valves and higher load springs, a more aggressive camshaft profile, revised pistons with a 10.8:1 compression ratio, a new fuel injector that increases air flow, and friction-reducing Crane roller rocker arms. The LT4 engine assembly is bolstered with a specially prepared crankshaft, steel camshaft and water pump gears driven by a roller chain, nodular-iron main bearing caps and premium head gaskets.
The LT4 stands out from its small block siblings with unique appearance features, including a red inlet manifold, red spark plug and coil wires, red “Corvette” lettering on the manifold covers and red “Grand Sport” lettering on the throttle-body cover. Models equipped with the LT4 engine have an 8000-rpm tachometer with a 6300-rpm redline. The High Output LT4 engine was only available with a 6-Speed Manual Transmission.
The RPO F45, Selective Real Time Damping, which this corvette has was substantially different than in the previous year even though it was priced the same as the 1995 FX3 option. Using data from wheel travel sensors and the Powertrain Control Module, a controller calculated the damping mode that would provide optimum control via special shock absorbers. It could alter each shock individually (unlike the earlier system which changed all shocks simultaneously) every 10 to 15 milliseconds, or about every foot of roadway at 60 mph.
1996’s On-Board-Diagnostics were much more sophisticated and complex, the number of diagnostic codes increasing from 60 to 140.
Even though it was the last of a generation, the 1996 Corvette regained the top spot (after two years in second place) in AutoWeek magazine’s annual subscriber survey of American cars in which readers had the most pride. Dodge Viper was second. (AutoWeek July 1, 1996).
