This 1966 Corvette Convertible is an overall nice presentable driver type of mid-year corvette. We have owned this one before, selling it locally back in 2007 and recently acquired the car back. It did change hands a couple times until we acquired it. We purchased the car originally back then out of St. Charles Missouri where that owner had owned this car since the early 80’s. According to the trim tag on the corvette is was a tuxedo black exterior with black standard vinyl interior. The owner that we sold it to back in 2007 later had it repainted in the current finish of flat black. The car is a paint job and not done in primer. It was done nicely and the fitment of the panels is very good. The doors line up nice and shut with ease, the headlights do open and close and fit well, the rear deck lid for the convertible softop does fit better than most mid-years I have seen and the hood aligns up nice. The hood is an original one as well. The window glass in the car is all good and does not need replacing. The trim around the windshield is good, but does have a few scuff marks and dings that could be corrected depending on how far you want to take this car too. The car does have the original style grill and all bumpers are installed onto the car. With the exception of the minor fender flares, the body is mostly stock. In fact the bonding strips are still intact and when these flares were installed many years ago, they simply cut out those small sections to flare the fenders. I did come across some sections to put the fenders back stop and a picture of those fiberglass pieces are shown. The wheels are new reproduction rally style ones sizes 15 X 7 mounted on blackwall radial Pirelli tires size P 215 70 ZR 15 all matching. The softop has been replaced recently in black vinyl with new weatherstrips. That is the only top that I received with the car however, I do have a hardtop available that needs restored at an additional cost of desired. The interior is nice and presentable with an original set of dash pads in excellent shape. No cracks or repairs that I have seen or noticed. That is unusual on most of these convertible models. The car does have the original gauges and radio that does work and the original console with a correct style shifter but does have a hurst linkage set up with that 5-speed transmission. The gauges do work but the clock and odometer has stopped working. We have ordered a new reproduction clock and will install that as soon as it arrives. The tachometer and speedometer both work along with the temp and oil pressure gauges. Windshield wipers work as well. The carpet and seats along with the door panels have been replaced at one time. The are in decent shape but not perfect. There is no real rips or tears, just some wear over the years. It does still have the seat belts intact and the original steering wheel is still in good condition.
The engine is the 427 c.i. Big block V8. 450 plus horsepower. The block casting number is correct for this year of car making this a period correct 1966 427 engine but non-original. Casting # 3869942. The aluminum intake is correct and the cylinder heads are period correct as well. The engine has been rebuilt at one time and is one of the strongest big block cars we have came across. The engine was built right and has many race hardened parts including roller rocker arms and girdles. It does have a solid-lift camshaft and will sit and idle with ease at any stop lights. In fact the car does not overheat even in hot summer days as we have driven it in them. Overall very impressive when you get behind the wheel and drive this one not to mention it sounds awesome! It does have that extra gear making it fun to cruise down the highway roads. It has had an updated newer ignition, custom valve covers and a set of headers mated up to that side exhaust system. The side exhaust covers are correct reproduction ones and were bought new back in 2007 when we first had the car. We did install a brand new correct Holley Carburetor but is not date coded. We also replaced the fuel pump and had the water pump rebuilt and installed new belts. The heater core has also been replaced along with the hoses. New LED tail lights along with a new gas door emblem and rear deck lid emblems have recently been installed.
The chassis is in good shape with a good solid frame. No heavy pitting. We have not cleaned or detailed the chassis. It has had a newer rear fiberglass leaf spring and Koni shocks at one time. You can still see the original labels on the front coil springs. It is missing the spare tire carrier assembly but those are available in a reproduction form to purchase if desired. We have removed the rear sway bar and installed new bushings and have new tie rod ends on order. I would not be afraid to get in this car and drive it.
A good presentable mid-year that could be left alone and taken to the next level such as a resto-mod as many are doing these days.
