We recently acquired this 1978 Corvette from the daughter of the original owner. The original owner of this car ordered it out the way he wanted and preserved this car well up until his passing in 2020. It is one unique and extremely rare 1978 Corvette. This was the 25th Anniversary Year for the Corvette and a special 25th Silver two-tone Anniversary was available and offered with several different interior colors but his bright red was by far the rarest and seldom seen. It is truly striking in every way and sets this one apart from all of the others you will see. This particular car was ordered by the well known Indy car driver A.J. Foyt where he owned and operated a new Chevrolet store in Houston Texas for only approx. 10 years. That alone should make the car more valuable and the paperwork we have to prove it. This Corvette did spend the majority of its life in southern Arkansas where the last time it was registered was 1992 and the original Arkansas license plate is still on the car. Even the original Arkansas inspection dated 1991 is still in the inner windshield. I cannot express just how original and unique this Corvette really is and should be shown and would be the perfect candidate for Bloomington Gold Survivor Judging and N.C.R.S. as well as a real Corvette enthusiast will appreciate just how this one was left untouched and original. The car has only been driven 4,348 miles and is actual and documented. It drives like a new 1978!
The other real special part of this Corvette is that it’s equipped with the L-82 engine and the manual 4-speed close-ratio M21 transmission. There were only 3,385 M21 4-Speed cars built out of 46,776 total 1978s produced making it a very rare one and narrowing it down with the red interior and equipment this car has, it likely could be less than 25. I don’t have those actual numbers but I have never come across one like this!

The paint and all trim are original to the car. It still has plenty of shine and is not faded out and needs a paint job as most Silver Anniversaries do as this one was stored inside and out of the elements. All emblems, trim, rocker moldings, and window glass are original and in excellent shape. The front and rear bumpers have slightly discolored but are still very presentable. There are a few minor imperfections as the car is 43 years old and the paint process is nowhere near like it is today. There was no clear coat on the car which in most cases if not properly cared for, will need resprayed. Not this one. The original A.J. Foyt Chevrolet decal is still in the rear bumper. The headlights, wipers, and all lighting work as they should and the original headlight bulbs are still intact.

The interior on this Corvette is stunning! Not only the color but the condition. It just doesn’t get any better than this one period! Down to the original carpeted floor mats, leather steering wheel, door panels, leather seats, center console, gauges, rear storage compartment, and weatherstripping are all near perfect shape and need no attention whatsoever. The seats have no wear, no cracking or fading, no dust behind the instrument lenses, it is simply a time capsule. The t-top storage bags and the original jack and lug wrench are all still intact and untouched. Even the original sun visor tag and radio are still left alone. No disappointments on the interior with this one!

The drivetrain to this car is all original and numbers matching. The original exhaust system, mufflers, and catalytic converter are intact and do not need replacing. There have been a few things replaced due to the age such as belts, hoses, brake calipers, master cylinder, and the a/c system has been reworked with a new compressor and is very cold. In fact many of these cars I get in the air just does not work well but this one does as I have personally driven the car around 200 miles. The fluids have all been changed, coolant flushed, brake fluid flush, oil and filter. We did replace the tires with the correct Goodyear reproduction ones that are exactly like what came on the car when new at a cost of close to $400 each! The tires on this car really make the look as it needs to be as accurate as possible. We did replace the aluminum wheels with new ones but do have the originals as they were starting to show some age if someone would want those. The engine bay and chassis still look good and presentable but some of the raw steel parts have some minor surface corrosion such as the hood latches, half shafts, and drive shafts as those items were raw steel from the factory and will tend to show a little aging after time. This is even common on a brand new vehicle from sitting on a dealer lot and exposed to moisture will do that to any car. This isn’t a very big deal but is addressed as the car is untouched and original for the most part.

What we have with this Corvette is incredible! Just about everything you would imagine is still with this Corvette all combined in a three-ring binder that is probably three inches thick. Included with this Corvette are two original purchase agreements, one when the car was ordered with the original deposit put down dated 10-8-77 and the other when the car came in which was much later. The original delivery date that was put on the warranty book was 5-24-78. Also included is the original pre-delivery inspection, copy of the original dealer invoice, window sticker, original title, 1978 Consumer Information brochure, original warranty book, original freedom Battery Brochure, Original Goodyear tire brochure, original maintenance schedule brochure, original blower motor operation sheet, original owners manual and the plastic bag it came in, original 1978 sales brochure, original 1978 registration to this car, original insurance papers, odometer statement, and most if not all vehicle registration from 1978 through the 80s. It is impressive that all of those documents were kept and in excellent original condition.
We also have an original photograph of the daughter standing by this Corvette way back when it was new. She resides in Nevada now.

There were 15,283 Silver Anniversary made in 1978 making it the most popular color combination for this model year. Interior choices available with this two-tone color were black, oyster, red, mahogany, dark blue and others but many were oyster and black and the rarest was likely the red as this one has.

The B2Z optional 25th Anniversary Paint consisted of a distinctive two-tone silver paint treatment where the upper body color is silver metallic with charcoal silver on the lower body. Pinstripes accentuate fender upper profiles, wheel openings, front fender vents, hood, and rear license cavity. Available aluminum wheels and dual sport mirrors required with this package.

This was an unusual car as it still has the crank windows and not the power window option which later became a standard feature. Other standard features include power steering, power 4-wheel disc brakes, positraction rear axle, custom interior with your choice of all leather or cloth and leather seating area, bucket seats, special instrumentation, console, cut-pile carpeting, tinted glass, outside rear view mirror, high-energy ignition system, 4-wheel independent suspension system, anti-theft audio alarm system, hideaway headlights, removable roof panel, and many more.
The optional L-82 engine features a higher lift camshaft, special cylinder heads with larger valving, impact-extruded pistons and a forged crankshaft with 4-bolt main bearing caps, plus finned aluminum rocker arm covers.
Close-ratio, 4-Speed manual gearbox, with gearing designed for the numerous up-and-down shifts associated with Corvette driving demands. Fully synchronized with a 2.43-to-1 first gear ratio.
The FE7 gymkhana suspension package, including heavy-duty front and rear shock absorbers, larger diameter front stabilizer bar, rear stabilizer bar added, plus higher rate front and rear springs.

Chevrolet marked the Corvette’s twenty-fifth year by introducing the most extensively redesigned model since 1968. New “fastback” rear end styling featured a larger rear window, but not a hatchback. This design change created significantly more luggage space behind the seats. Also, a retracting cover was added for security and sun protection.
The 1978 interior was redesigned significantly. The speedometer and tachometer were redone in a more square, vertical mode. A glove box was added. Inner door panels were completely new and featured screwed-on armrests instead of the molded-in style common to Corvettes since 1965. Windshield wiper and washer controls were moved back to the instrument panel, but the dimmer remained on the steering column. The center console, redone in 1977, essentially carried over.
“25th Anniversary” emblems appeared exclusively on 1978 models.
Corvette paced the 1978 Indy 500 race. The original Pace Car paint scheme evolved into a “Silver Anniversary” paint option.
