Since 1901, the Indian name has been a staple in the motorcycle industry. In 1953, the company ceased operations and folded due to financial difficulties and intense post-WWII competition. Some forty-five years later, in 1999, the Indian Chief motorcycle was reborn, and it was a hit! Built and assembled in Gilroy, California, from 1999 through 2003, these Indians made a name for themselves throughout the motorcycle scene. These motorcycles were not cheap; in fact, they had an MSRP of $24,000 back in the day, but had so much chrome and added accessories already built into the base price, as the Harley-Davidson competition did not at that time.
These earlier Gilroy Indians had a low seat height and came with the S&S Super Stock V-Twin Engine and were a show-stopper wherever you went. This example came out of Kansas, where the owner had it for several years up until his passing. We acquired the motorcycle from the son and have recently had a local shop service the bike and get it road-ready to ride and enjoy. These Indians had several unique features including the stretched fuel tanks and signature Indian style fenders, unique tear-drop style head light, Indian front Chief fender light, chrome front end including the lower fork tubes, beach-style chrome handlebars, white-faced classic speedometer with an Indian arrow for the needle, tear-drop style chrome air cleaner, a very low seat height of just 24 inches so the bike can accommodate most riders, floor boards, powder coated gloss black frame and engine casing, chrome fishtail style exhaust system with the Indian logo, lay-down style chrome license plate assembly, custom leather seat made by Corbin, chrome oil tank, polished aluminum brake calipers and brackets, polished aluminum foot controls, Indian arrow shifter linkage, chrome handlebar controls, detachable clear windshield with the Indian logo, whitewall tires, chrome 60-spoke laced wheels, belt driven with an aluminum polished pulley, auxiliary headlights that can be turned on and off, and the list goes on.
This example has only 4,600 actual miles and is in excellent shape for the age. It is finished in factory Bright Yellow and Cream, a two-tone nostalgic look. The paint, chrome, and finish on most of the components still look very nice. One or two minor nicks on the paint and some flaking of the chrome rear wheel from not being able to clean it as easily due to the fender covering up much of the wheel. Overall, it is very presentable and a show-stopper every time you take it for a ride!
Two seats are included with this motorcycle as well as a service manual, recent service receipt, previous owner history, and some literature pertaining to the 2000 Indian model.
